Arte-Via Cooperativa, based in Lousã, launches the 7th edition of the International Literary Festival of the Interior (FLII) – Words of Fire, in honor of the victims of forest fires, under the auspices of the motto “Art and culture as reanimators of a region and a people”.
This festival is patronized by His Excellency the President of the Republic.
The associated partners are the General Directorate of Books, Archives and Libraries (DGLAB), the School Libraries Network (RBE), the National Reading Plan (PNL), the José Afonso Association, the Camonian Studies Center of the University of Coimbra, Conímbriga Museum, 25th of April Documentation Center and Coimbra Prison.
This is an inter-municipal event, hence its innovative nature, which will take place in ten municipalities in the region affected by the fires, with the aim of taking books and writers to the most unusual and unpredictable places, such as factories, fields, beaches, churches , markets, pilgrimages, places where people work and live.
In other words, the books reach the public because they too miss them.
This edition celebrates the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, the 95th anniversary of the birth of Zeca Afonso, the centenary of António Ramos Rosa and the 500th anniversary of Luís Vaz de Camões, tribute will also be paid to the Portuguese gypsy community, in the country for more than 500 years. We will also address burning issues for the future of the world, including the environmental emergency. The theme of this edition will be “Land of fraternity, blessed homeland, my beloved”.
This festival brings together local authorities / institutions from the municipalities of Ansião, Arganil, Castanheira de Pera, Coimbra, Condeixa-a-Nova, Góis, Lousã, Miranda do Corvo, Pedrógão Grande and Tábua. This year with an extension on the Island of Mozambique, entitled “Camões, Words of Fire”, on June 10th, in celebration of Luís de Camões’ 500th birthday.
Municipal libraries and school library networks are crucial in organizing FLII – Words of Fire.
Taking place from the 14th to the 17th of June 2024, in ten municipalities in the districts of Coimbra and Leiria, FLII – Palavras de Fogo, aims to involve all development agents, from all participating municipalities and all local talents, in all activities to be carried out simultaneously: training actions, competitions, lectures, workshops, readings, book fairs, shows, multimedia, performances, installations, exhibitions, for and with all audiences of all age groups.
The concept underlying this festival is that of a synergistic achievement, catalyzing the resources of the municipalities and other institutions that are part of the consortium, monetizing and leveraging the best that each one has, in a joint effort to overcome adversities. And, in the name of the regenerating word, where there are people there will be books.
They will be in the most unexpected places, available to anyone who wants to read them, Portuguese and foreign writers will go to the most surprising places, the books and words will bring color back to life amidst the darkness.
During the month of June there will again be a literary residency, whose guests will visit the consortium’s municipalities.
